You Will Love Amsterdam’s Main Attractions
Amsterdam
Some people who go there by themselves, in a group or as a couple may enjoy the red light district, the night clubs, and even the coffee shops that offer much more than just coffee. Even those that enjoy daily activities as much as the night life will have many different attractions to see. One of the best ones for those that like beer is the Heineken Museum, located in the Heineken Brewery, established in 1930. You can go on the tour, take a trip as a beer bottle through the process, have sample tasting and even get a personal gift at the end of the tour.
Many people don’t know just how many canals Amsterdam has, probably as many as are in Venice. In order to really take in as many sites as you can in one day, a canal tour is a must. During the summer you can enjoy a canal tour in an open topped boat, and there are also enclosed glass ones as well. In addition, for an extra charge you could have lunch or dinner while taking in the sites of the city.
Museums are abundant in Amsterdam, and these can be enjoyed by young and old alike. It is a good idea to start with the three top museums, the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. All three are home to some of the finest historical exhibits, with the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum having activities for the young and old alike.
If you are interested in some of the more odd and unique museums and attractions that Amsterdam has to offer, one creepy place to visit is the Museum Vrolik. This is part of Amsterdam’s Academic Medical Center, and displays preserved human remains in jars. Some of these are strictly in the name of science, others are of congenital defects, and other anomalies. It has more than 150 different specimens, some may not be for the squeamish.
If you are a cat person, there are a few stops that you have to see. One of them is the Katten Kabinet, founded by Bob Meijer to honor his loved feline companion. It is a collection of paintings, sculptures, and prints that are all dedicated to cats throughout history, and some of these bear the names of Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso, to name a few. It is housed in a canal house, and the museum can also be seen in the movie Ocean’s Twelve.
The De Poezenboot, or Cat Boat is a floating feline sanctuary, giving homes to numerous stray cats throughout the city. It is also staffed fully by volunteers that are eager to teach visitors proper cat ownership. A lot of the canal tours point this boat out, where at any time of the day cats can be seen lounging the decks.
While you staying in Amsterdam, you may want to consider a holiday apartment instead of a hotel. They are located all over the city, are much less expensive that a hotel, and have all the comforts of home, including bedrooms, kitchens, and even have televisions and DVD players, depending on the accommodation.
