From the blue seas to the wooded hills, Barcelona is a city made for music and dance, food and drinks as well as the general merriment of laughter, love and life. Such is the city’s allure that it is one of the most visited cities in Catalonia and in Spain and for many good reasons, too.
It is an ancient city filled with the charms of markets, churches and buildings that date back hundreds of years as well as contemporary skyscrapers that house biomedical and high-tech businesses. So many places are begging to be seen, either by car or on foot, from the La Rambla to the seaside beaches.
The people of Barcelona are one of the friendliest in all of Spain. Flower sellers, street performers, stall painters and strollers – all will lend a helping hand when asked and do so with a generous heart. The things to do in Barcelona like water sports, extreme adventure, nightclub hopping, strolling and even just taking a leisurely siesta all add up to become one unique Spanish experience.
For these reasons, Barcelona is an excellent place to spend a few days or a few weeks of vacation. Just make sure to book your holiday apartment in advance lest you find yourself fighting for the last room in the hotel during the peak season. Go online and book through an online accommodation reservation site.
Holiday plans can be made to coincide with a couple of the holidays celebrated with much gusto in Barcelona. Music and dance as well as food and fun with family and friends mark these holidays except for the more somber holidays of Lent. At other times, do as the Barcelonans do – bailamos!
The most festive of these holidays is the Festes de la Merce, Barcelona’s annual festival held every 24th of September. Locals and visitors alike mingle to participate in the many events from the live musical concerts, the fireworks displays and the procession of wooden giants. Cava, Catalonia’s national drink, is consumed in great quantities – truly, a great way to loosen inhibitions for the singing and dancing that follows.
And then there is the Festes de Gracia, a uniquely Catalonian celebration on August 15 every year to commemorate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Lest anybody thinks that this is a somber religious celebration, think again. Barcelona explodes with colors and contests, fun and festivities, food and drinks and general good cheer all around. Live music coupled with dancing groups partying all night long in the streets is a staple of life in Barcelona during the Festes de Gracia.
Other holidays to look forward to in Barcelona that involve music and dance are the three-day music festival of Sonar, the Sant Jordi on April 23 similar to Valentine’s Day and the Fira de Santa Llucia from December 2 to 23 with sellers of Christmas objects lining the streets. In all these holidays, dancing to the beat of the music is a welcome given. Bailamos in Barcelona, indeed!
