Goharshad Mosque is an old structure you would love to explore to the south of Imam Reza’s shrine in Mashad. Built in 15th century AD, the building took about 12 years to be completed. It is considered to be one of the noblest mosques of Central Asia.
Goharshad, the wife of Shahrokh, Timurid king, ordered the construction of this elegant mosque. The inscriptions found on the facade of this structure suggest that it was built when Shahrokh was the king. A well-known Shirazy architect was assigned to carry out the design of this mosque.
Renovation Work
Your trip to Mashad helps you understand the comprehensive deed of endowment which was made in 1425.The structure was built and renovated many times when the Safavid king, Shah Abbas was on the throne. This powerful ruler of Iran has contributed a lot to the construction, restoration and reconstruction of lots of religious sites of Iran. This was the time when the Uzbeks were completely ousted from Iran. There is an inscription on the northern veranda which bears proof of the monument being renovated by the Safavids.
There was a devastating earthquake in Mashad in 1803, which ruined Goharshad Mosque. Consequent renovations were made by Qajars in 19th century. You can still see the original beauty of the monument as it stands covering an area of 6049 square meters today, with a huge courtyard in the middle.
Different Parts of Goharshad Mosque
During your trip to Mashad, you can see the four big verandas in the mosque. Other aspects of the building include 28 entrance doors and 22 chambers. The entrances lead you from the courtyard to the Shabestans or the prayer halls. There are also 8 mihrabs, a dome and 2 minarets. Beautiful patterns adorn various parts of Goharshad Mosque and you can notice its delicate calligraphy works. The Quranic verses are painted on the tiles. The unique decoration, tile work, calligraphy, design and architecture of the structure are its main attractions.
Attractive Decoration of the Mosque
The minarets are noticeable because of their being thick towers and merging with the marble finishing of the structure. It gives the impression of being both colorful and solid.
Enamel bricks make up the court facade along with the finest mosaic. The tiles are of all colors like yellow, green, white, saffron, cobalt blue, turquoise, black and aubergine, imparting a great look to the structure. Floral patterns and geometrical schemes are made on the open galleries, arcades, recesses and the eyvans of the Goharshad Mosque.
