World Challenge is an experience of a lifetime; you will literally never experience anything else like it whether you take a gap year, travel the World or become an Aid worker. It is a scheme which enables groups of young people to travel to one of hundreds of destinations around the World and help underprivileged communities. The scheme is run through Schools and runs over the academic year, with between three and six weeks actually abroad.
The scheme starts with the students involved being required to raise the money to pay for the trip. This part of the scheme goes on for several months as, depending on the scheme the school chooses, several thousand pounds needs to be raised. The World Challenge Scheme has support and advice for students on how to raise the money, but here are some more ideas.
Every school has folding tables. Folding tables are an excellent piece of fundraising equipment which students can use for an array of activities. For example, it would have to be virtually impossible for a cake sale in a school, at break time to not raise any money! All the fundraisers would need is to bake some cakes, a folding table or two and a notice in the class register. The students could arrange a fun sports tournament, to be held after school one day where a few teachers volunteer to help and each team has to pay a certain amount to enter. The organisers just need to set up a folding table by the entrance to the sports field/courts and ensure that everyone has paid to enter and manage the teams’ points etc to determine the winner. Christmas present wrapping can be very successful as a means of raising money. Students can do this at lunch time if they set up a few folding tables and chairs in the school hall or lunch room. These fundraising activities are fun, involve lots of people and are rewarding because they help people.
Young people are required to raise the money and manage money themselves. They have to plan their trip and consider things such as the equipment they will need. The participants get to travel to an underprivileged community and experience the culture and hardships that the people there live through. The participants get to help this community through a rewarding activity such as building a school and also experience things such as riding camels across the desert. This is all done with the support and guidance of teachers and dedicated staff in a safe and controlled environment.
