Traveling with Holiday Presents: 5 Suggestions for Airline Travel

Traveling for the holidays can mean friends, family, and fun times, but often getting there is a hassle, particularly when it comes to transporting gifts. Here we describe 5 tips to help make your trip be problem-free.

1) Hold off on gift-wrapping until after the flight. Don’t waste your precious time wrapping gifts before you leave on your trip; airport security might have to unwrap them when you go through the checkpoint. You can wrap the gifts once you get to your destination, or you can pack in your luggage tissue paper and gift bags to make the job easy later. Some savvy travelers even recommend leaving holiday shopping until after you arrive, which may be an option if you have free time.

2) Be sure you’re aware of TSA guidelines (www.tsa.gov) Any liquid, aerosol, or gel has to be in containers that hold three ounces or less if you want to bring it on the airplane in your carry-on bag. This regulation applies not only to toiletries, but also to drink items and even snow globes.

3) If you have the chance, mail gifts ahead of time. Mailing gifts ahead of time helps you avoid having to worry about traveling with gifts. Make sure, though, to mail the presents early enough to ensure their arrival, and be sure to warn the recipients to not peek in them!

4) Pack in your luggage empty duffel bags. This is a good suggestion for any time you travel, holiday or not. With presents and souvenirs from where you visit, you’ll likely be coming back with more in tow than you left with; extra luggage means you won’t need to stuff all your presents or souvenirs in one bag.

5) Be aware of the luggage restrictions of your airline. Some airlines have special restrictions over the holiday season. Research your airline’s restrictions to ensure you’re prepared and don’t have to deal with last minute rearranging of luggage.
