Rome’s nickname of The Eternal City is well deserved. People have enjoyed Roman Holidays for hundreds of years, and chances are Rome will meet or exceed your expectations as well. Whether you are a lover of art, fashion, or food, or if you are simply yearning to live like a Roman for a week or two, here are a few of the top things to keep in mind when you touch down at Fiumicino Airport.
When in Rome, Use Public Transportation
An excellent introduction to Roman mass transit is the Leonardo Express, which speeds you from the airport to the Termini Station in central Rome. Visitors from the U.S. who are accustomed to renting a car and driving themselves everywhere they need to go may feel a bit bewildered at first. But fear not. Between the buses and the subways, it is easy to get around the central city. Romans are justly proud of the convenience and accessibility of the public transportation system. The main city bus routes also are an inexpensive way to orient yourself to major landmarks like the Trevi Fountain or the Coliseum.
There Are Monuments and Museums Galore
Rome is a city of striking beauty. With hundreds of museums, fountains, monumental buildings and gardens, it is easy to become overwhelmed. If your time in Rome is brief, do a little research to winnow down your list of must-see places and, if possible, book your museum tickets online so as not to be disappointed. One of our top priorities during our last trip was to see the Bernini statuary in the Villa Borghese. If we had not checked the museum website ahead of time and purchased tickets in advance we would not have been able to get in. The same can be said for the Vatican Museum.
Cafe and Restaurant Etiquette
When you are ordering a coffee at a bar counter, it is customary to pay in advance, get a receipt, and wait for your drink. In a slow or quiet cafe, the barista may carry your coffee out to you at your table, complete with the mandatory small wrapped piece of chocolate and a giant packet of sugar. If you are at a crowded bar, you may observe that everyone is placing their receipts on the counter with a 20 cent coin on top. That will get you your coffee as well as a kind word. Americans also should understand that, unlike the common U.S. practice of getting your restaurant tab the minute you finish your dessert, a Roman waiter would never think of presenting your restaurant bill to you until you specifically ask for it.
Do Drink the Water
Unlike many places in the world today, tap water in Rome is safe to drink, with the added bonus that it is good tasting. While it is customary to order a bottle of Pellegrino (still or sparkling) when you dine, there is no need to worry about having to obtain bottled water in your hotel room.
