The popular Egyptian holiday destination of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula offers more than just sun, sand and sea, it is an excellent place for wildlife enthusiasts to spot a vast array of animal species both on land and in the water. Known for stunning coral reefs and perfect diving conditions, the Red Sea coast offers tourists a taste of the exotic underwater with a chance to see thousands of species of fish. The area is also home however to magnificent national parks teaming with reptiles, mammals and insects. When booking a holiday to Sharm el-Sheikh, consider hiring a car to be able to visit three of the most popular tourist destinations teeming with wildlife, and of course, spectacular views.
Ras Mohammed National Park is just 25km from Sharm el-Sheikh and boasts warm waters, stunning coral reefs and sensational geological features such as sand dunes and sandstone mountains. The area is protected as it is an important breeding area for endangered birds, reptiles and mammals. The nearby mangroves are also a protected breeding area for many species, and an excursion to this national park offers the eco tourist a chance to view storks and raptors. There are regular coach trips provided by tour operators, perfect for the traveller that doesn’t fancy driving along the Egyptian coast.
Nabq Managed Resource Protected Area is a 35km road trip in a northerly direction from Sharm el-Sheikh, and is the largest protected area along the Gulf of Aqaba coastline. The reefs in the area are teeming with life, and offer excellent diving although visibility is sometimes low due to sediment from the mangroves. This protected area is also home to six species of plant not found anywhere else on the planet as well as Osprey, Spoonbills, Ibex, Hyrax and Gazelle. To help protect the area local Bedouin groups are integrated into wildlife management strategies and tourist services.
St. Katherine National Park is of historical, archaeological and cultural importance as well as being an area that was established to protect wildlife. Still steeped in Bedouin culture, including monastic Bedouin in the monastery of St Katherine, the national park gives the visitor a chance to truly appreciate the Egyptian heritage and witness some of the most exciting geographical features in the Sharm el-Sheikh area. Visitors should take particular care when visiting this national park to follow tourist guidelines to avoid causing damage to the surrounding environment.
