As VAT increases and the cost of living rises, everyone is beginning to feel the pinch, keeping a tight lid on their wallets. However, there are still many destinations that you can travel to cheaply. Here is a list of the top 9 cheapest holiday destinations that you can visit this year without breaking the bank.

1. Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a country in southern Europe, bordered by Romania, Serbia, Greece, Macedonia and Turkey. Last year it was the number 1 choice for holiday makers and is perfect for tourists due to its many resorts along the Black sea coast. Food is very cheap in the country, as are items of shopping should you wish to being home a souvenir or two. Bulgarian resorts often offer 4 star accommodation at a really good price, meaning that you get the luxury of an expensive holiday at a fraction of the price.

2. Corfu
Corfu is the second largest Ionian Island surrounded by the Ionian sea and located off the westernmost point of Greece. It is one of the most popular of the Greek Islands due to the land being steeped in history. With a number of old buildings and ruins, the country offers a lot of opportunity for exploring. In 2002 the Drachma was replaced by the Euro, so it is best to change your sterling when you actually get to Greece to get a better exchange rate than the UK high street. Most hotels in Corfu have a 3-5 star rating and are very reasonably priced.

3. Tunisia
Tunisia is the northernmost country in Africa, bordered by Algeria and Libya, and is situated along the Atlas mountain range. Similarly to Corfu, the country is steeped in history and offers many ruins and tunisian style buildings along with superb views. Tunisia is a non Euro destination and therefore has the Tunisian Dinar as its currency. It is important to bear in mind that you cannot export tunisian currency, and so your bank cannot order any for you to take with you. Many tourists arrive with no currency and just change up their spending money on arrival. Tunisian hotels are often rated between 3 and 5 stars and are well maintained despite being very low cost.

4. Turkey
Almost anyone can afford a holiday to Turkey. Being a non-Euro destination means that Turkey is cheap for all of your holiday needs. Accommodation is incredibly reasonable, food is cheap and the ability to haggle for items when you shop will result in you getting some incredible deals. The Turkish Lira offers a far better exchange rate than visiting a country which holds the Euro, and often you can book 5 star accommodation in Turkey for less that it would cost for 3 star accommodation in most other destinations.

5. Iceland
Previously, Iceland has never really been known to be a cheap destination – until now. The island, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, suffered financial meltdown meaning that the country has now gone from ridiculously expensive to affordable. Though it is not the cheapest on this list, it is well worth the trip to experience the stunning landscape, waterfalls, geysers and geothermal spas that it offers. Basics like food and accommodation have seen dramatic drops in price, so there has never been a better time to visit.

6. Egypt
The Arab Republic of Egypt is situated mainly in North Africa. With hours of sunshine daily, and high temperatures, this is a popular destination for most tourists. The low-cost Egyptian pound makes this country one of the best value locations for a traveller, as both food and accommodation are incredibly reasonable. They also except UK sterling and the Euro as currency, but it is advised to change your spending money to the Egyptian pound before you travel, as some of the exchange rates that they calculate in restaurants or whilst shopping when you are out there are widely off of the actual exchange rate

7. Mexico
Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas, bordered by the United States, Belize and Guatemala. With the decrease in the Mexican Peso, the exchange rate is highly favourable for travellers to this exotic destination. The country boasts world-class snorkelling sites and stunning beaches alongside Mayan ruins. Things are relatively cheap, even in the tourist areas, but if you stay slightly more off the beaten track away from the tourist hot-spots then you will find that it costs you even less.

8. Vietnam
Vietnam is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsular in southeast Asia. The country has rapidly grown since the war finished 30 years ago and you can find good food there for just 7-10GBP. With lots of historical sites and museums along with reasonably priced accommodation, this country has a lot to offer tourists.

9. India
India resides in south Asia and is the seventh largest country with regards to geographical area. Steeped in religion and history, India can be an extraordinary destination in which to experience culture. If you stay off the beaten track, away from the major tourist hotspots, you can live for around 5-7GBP per day in the country.
