Great Exuma is the largest of the approximately 360 islands in the Bahamas. Low-lying, sandy islands and smaller neighbors are also known as “cays.” The Tropic of Cancer passes through the district. Great Exuma is about thirty-seven miles long. The largest town on the island is named George Town, after the British King George III, and contains a population of a little under one thousand people. Originally settled by Loyalists fleeing the new United States after the end of the Revolutionary War, Great Exuma and its surrounding islands have become popular destinations for travelers seeking a fun and relaxing adventure, who are attracted to the magnificent splendor of the district.
