Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Minnesota, scenic and idyllic Lanesboro, named one of “America’s prettiest towns” by Forbes magazine and Yahoo Travel, is located approximately 130 miles southeast of Minneapolis. Hugely popular with tourists, Lanesboro, which occupies a tiny 1.3 square miles and has a population of less than a 1000 residents, is renowned for its Bed and Breakfasts and is aptly called “The Bed and Breakfast Capital of Minnesota”.

Named one of “The 20 Best Dream Towns In America” by Outside Magazine, Lanesboro is home to several tiny, unique shops and restaurants perfectly suited to serve the tourists that flock to the town for weekends or longer holidays. The Root River which cuts through the town and the waterfall at the town’s edge provide a perfect setting for an idyllic getaway from the hustle and bustle of big city life or the monotony of everyday work life.

The Outdoors: If you love the great outdoors, you would hit southeast Minnesota’s premier recreational trail system, the Root River trail which winds through more than 60 miles of lush green forests that grace the Root river valley. The trail, which was essentially an abandoned railroad bed, was bought by the State of Minnesota and converted into a paved hiking and biking trail . As you absorb the fresh, clean air and soak in the breathtaking views, you will pass through many small, peaceful towns, cross over some 48 small bridges and watch the happenings on many tiny family owned farms that line the trail. There is no fee for use of the Root river trail except for cross country skiing in winter.

The Arts: Lanesboro is home to The Commonweal Theatre Company, a professional theatre group which produces some 6 plays every year with more than 200 performances. The theatre is committed to an annual production of the works of Henrick Ibsen, the 19th century Norwegian playwright and poet. In 2009 the theatre produced the plays Hedda Gabler by Henrick Ibsen, The Odd Couple by Neil Simon and The Rainmaker by Richard Nash among others.

The Shopping Scene: Lanesboro is the recipient of the “Great American Main Street” Award for 1998. The award given annually by The National Trust for Historic Preservation celebrates those towns across America that have successfully transformed their historic main streets and downtowns into vibrant places to live, work and play. Lanesboro’s main street provides an idyllic setting for a weekend spent browsing through small antique shops, jewelry design studios and pottery works joints run by local families. One of Lanesboro’s Jewelers, Crown Trout Jewelers, run by Liz Bucheit and Kary Kilmer made it to the finals of the 2002 International Gold Virtuosi Jewelry Design Competition. Important to note that the competition had 5200 entries from all the world over and Crown Trout Jewelers were one of the only four American jewelry design joints that made it to the finals.

Lanesboro, quite simply, is a tiny, idyllic town that makes a perfect getaway, whether it be for a weekend or a long summer holiday. From the sports enthusiast, the city dweller, to the arts enthusiast and collector, Lanesboro, Minnesota has something exciting for everyone!
