Situated in the county of Yorkshire, York is a popular city in the United Kingdom, most notably for its fantastic and in-depth historical aspects. However, with such a diverse and varied amount of attractions both in and around the city of York, it makes a fantastic destination for everyone in the family, irrelevant of whether they are staying for a few hours whilst on their way to another destination or for a full weeks holiday.
With so many different attractions to see, choosing which to visit first and foremost (or even in which order if you have to prioritize because of a short time in the city) can be difficult and therefore it is strongly advised to take a look at the following five destinations first.
1. JORVIK Viking Museum. Opened originally in 1984 to display the thousands upon thousands of Viking artifacts that were found in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the JORVIK Viking Museum went through a massive five million pound overhaul in 2001.
Showcasing life in the way it would have been in the Viking town that was excavated, the museum has seen almost twenty million visitors since it opened its doors and has just recently been added to even more, displaying more and more fantastic exhibits.
2. York City Walls. York is known for its interesting and intriguing history and many different parts of the towns fortifications can still be seen today, most notably the York City Walls.
Surrounding the city almost entirely, the City Walls are a grade one listed building and stretch for what seems like an infinite length (they travel approximately two miles), with a recently introduced audio tour now available to utilize to ensure that you can take in the sheer complexity and wonderfulness of the walls at your own speed.
3. Eden Camp. Located just outside of York near to the town of Malton is Eden Camp, a magnificent World War Two museum which is set in an actual Prisoner of War camp that was used throughout the war.
Being in operation for over twenty years, Eden Camp is massively popular with families of all ages and is said to be one of the best World War Two museums anywhere in Europe.
4. York Dungeon. Throughout many of the major cities in England, there is a museum that is dedicated to the dungeons and all things gruesome with the history of the said city. York, being a particularly well-visited city, is no exception and the York Dungeon museum, whilst not one to be missed, is definitely not for the faint hearted.
Featuring exhibits displaying the horror of the some of Yorks more ghastly history, the dungeons come to life with real models and audio displays making a very terrifying, if not chilling, experience.
5. York Minster. An absolutely awe-inspiring piece of architecture, York Minister is among one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Europe. As the second highest seat in the Church of England, the Minster is still used regularly to this day but is also a popular tourist attraction, primarily for its stunning architectural delights.
York has masses upon masses of attractions for everyone to enjoy, so book yourself into one of the many York hotels that are located in and around the city and enjoy the sights and sounds of such a wonderful part of England.
