Egypt is one of the world’s most fascinating countries, awash with ancient monuments and legendary figures that tourists flock to visit each year. Over the past few years the ancient history of Egypt has grown, with new pyramids, treasures and even pharaohs being unearthed from the sand covered ground. There new discovered lead to brand new tourism opportunities for families, couples and travellers of all ages to learn more about this vibrant ancient culture. From returning treasures to new pyramids to explore, here is a guide to the not so ancient history of the captivating African country.
In 2008 a 4,000 year old tomb was uncovered in a burial site just south of Cairo, inside the tomb was the remains of two officials from the ancient court of Pharaoh Utas. The tombs were a major find for archaeologists working on the burial site; excavation will continue to see if more tombs are located within the area to give a greater insight into this specific period in Egypt’s history. Fast forward to 2009 and another tomb is discovered in a recently found pyramid. The pyramid, located in the Saqqara area hid the remains of a queen thought to have ruled Egypt 4,300 years ago. Experts believe that the royal remains belong to Seshestet, one of the only female rulers to control Egypt. The tomb itself contained a skull, pelvis and leg bones along with other body parts wrapped in linen, ceramic pots and fragments of gold finger jewellery were also found within the sarcophagus. The more valuable items that would usually be found in a royal burial site had already been stolen by ancient grave robbers.
Tourism to Egypt has been steadily growing over the last few decades, mainly due to the popularity of the modern Sharm El Sheikh resort. However due to the rise in ancient antiquities and monuments being discovered many tourists are choosing to come to Egypt to learn more about the civilisation that they thought was already uncovered. Many of Egypt’s treasures have been slowly making their way back to the country after being stolen or misplaced in locations around the world. A wooden sarcophagus that has been kept in the US for over 100 years is the most recent returnee to the country which will now be proudly displayed in Cairo. No matter how many times you visit there is always something new to see, whether it is a brand new pyramid to explore or a newly unwrapped mummy to meet!
