The recent economic issues of Spain has affected not only its local population but also the expat population. Amongst the foreigners in the country, the Indian population numbers nearly 30,000 strong.

Most of the early Indians that came to Spain were brought to the Iberian peninsula from Africa. As the modes of travel became easier, many others came straight from India and other places throughout the world. A large number came from the Canary Islands at the end of the Second World War. Most of the Indians in the country came to Spain either for a trade or business that continue up to this date.

The highest influx of Indians to Spain came between 2004 and 2007 due to the increased labor demand in the country. Most of the Indians came from other European Union countries that have migrated to Spain seeking wages for work. In addition, many of the Indians that have moved to Spain were illegal immigrants, who later on were legalized after an amnesty program by the Spanish government.

For an Indian to enter Spain, they are required to obtain a European Union Visa. This can be done through completion of an application form with two passport size photos, a valid passport with a validity period of three months and payment of an application fee of 60 Euros. Also included in the application are documentary evidence of financial means, such as a bank statement covering the last three (3) months with the applicant’s home address, proof of status, such as a certification of employment or proof of employment. If the person has been invited to Spain, the applicant must provide the letter of invitation.

Indians currently living in Spain are held in high regard due to their business acumen and their professionalism. Amongst the most respected entrepreneurs in the country are Indian nationals and are given high regard because of their peaceful and silent ways of doing business in the country.

In addition, the Indian culture has also found its recognition in Spanish society. These include places for Indian worship that can be found in the many cities of the country, even temples in Valencia, Ceuta and the Canary Islands. In metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona, there are Gudwaras that can be found.

Another aspect of Indian culture that has entrenched itself in Spanish society is the cuisine. There are many Indian restaurants found in Barcelona, Alicante, even Madrid. Even with the many restaurants in the country, many Indians still prefer a home cooked meal of curry and tandoori.

With all the current issues that Spain as a country is facing nowadays, a particular sector of the country remains steadfast in its way of life and culture. The Indian population in Spain has weathered many storms and with their attitude and acumen, would be able to succeed despite the difficulties in Spain.
