Whilst the centre may be one of the most visited tourist destinations in the United Kingdom outside of London, for those are not aware, the JORVIK Viking Centre is built on the site of a factory of a popular confectioners in York, known as Cravens. When Cravens moved to another premises and further to their old factory being demolished, extensive archaeological work was carried out by the York Archaeological Trust and to their amazement they uncovered more than they ever expected
Over the course of their excavation work, the York Archaeological Trust uncovered in excess of forty thousand individual items, including remains of some still-intact Viking buildings, such as work areas and farm houses.
Rather than simply create images of what the area would have looked like in the times of the Vikings, the Trust decided to actually create a museum that had life size reconstructions of the buildings that they had uncovered and made it as realistic as possible by utilizing both sounds and smells that would have been around within the buildings.
Open to the public for a quarter of a decade, the JORVIK Viking Centre has gone through many regeneration and improvement projects thought the last twenty five years, with the largest being in 2001 when over five million pounds was spent enlarging the centre, allowing for greater and more extensive exhibits to be developed.
