Cape Town is one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa. While my friend Craig and I were on our road trip driving through the country, we had amazing experiences. I always prefer to use a hire car during my holidays and one of the first things we took care of when arriving in the city was renting a vehicle for our exciting excursion. We decided to choose a smaller, more economical hatchback to travel from the city of Cape Town to Hermanus and then to the Cape wine lands.
Starting the road trip!
Hermanus was our first choice because of the famous Whale Festival. The road to Hermanus is a breathtaking experience and the scenery along the way is mind-blowing! We passed forests, mountains, and drove through mountain passes with views of the ocean that I will never forget. There are wild flowers everywhere, with interesting little shops and farmhouses dotted all over the place.
The wonderful thing about a road trip is that the journey is the special experience and not the destination. While our little hire car radio was playing our favourite tunes, Craig and I were singing along without a care in the world. The natural surroundings of the Cape have a peaceful, soothing effect on the soul and you start to appreciate life again.
A whale of a tale!
Even though the town of Hermanus is small, the festival is well known and tourists come from all over the world to take part in the festivities. There is a whale migration every year during breeding season. You can see the whales up close in the bay and I am sure they enjoyed all the attention from the crowds, because the whales where showing off, waving their tales and frolicking in the waves. I felt so appreciative to be a part of this magical moment, where man and nature become one.
The whales are the main attraction, but whale watching is not the only activity in this charming little town. There are beer gardens, flea market stalls, live music and tons of fun and playtime for the kids. The atmosphere was electric; everybody seemed content and extremely happy!
The Cape Wine Lands
After Hermanus we were back on the road. This time we pointed our hire car towards the wine lands. Cape Town is well known for its wine farms all over the region and many renowned first class wines are produced in these parts. It was Craig’s turn to drive the rental car, which gave me the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular surroundings. We took tons of photos, but you have to experience Cape Town’s beauty for yourself. A picture does not do it justice!
We finally reached the Cape wine lands and spent a few days touring various routes and enjoying the different wine tastings. I really loved this road trip, the Cape is a special place and with good company it is a superb holiday destination.
