Successful Indian Start Ups
Bobby Castro is the online editor at the NRI community, where he has published a number of articles about NRI Indians living in New Zealand and many other topics.
Eight years ago, Manas Kumar founded a company in his bedroom with a few close friends with just $10 start up capital. Now the company has become a juggernaut in the New Zealand economy and now being listed in the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
The company is Optimizer HQ and it joined seven other companies based in New Zealand that has been listed in the Deutsche Bourse. Opening at 0.10 Euro, it has raised its value to 0.40 Euro in just a little over six hours of trading. This company’s primary business is web development and has flourished to provide newest technologies to businesses that are eager to find and flourish with their online consumer base.
When Manas went to New Zealand, it was to play cricket professionally but this was short-lived as injuries forced him to find work elsewhere, ending up as counter person for a fast food chain. He recounts, “I had no money and worked every hour I could, in the end there was little point in going home so I’d just find somewhere to sleep in downtown Auckland before my next shift started.”
That was the bottom of the barrel. Determined to make a better life for himself, he invested $10 to purchase a domain name and soon Optimizer HQ was born. The main product of the company was an email marketing process that allowed businesses to communicate directly with clients and foster deeper relationships. Now, the company’s client list includes Harvard University, Pfizer, Burger King and Footlocker, The New Zealand Police Force and the New Zealand Post.
He proudly said, “Just last year we were delivering about 300,000 emails per month which I was really happy with. Now we’re sending more than 400 million emails and expect to hit the one billion mark by next June.”
The listing in the Frankfurt SE is the beginning of a new era for the company and one that allows it to showcase its technologies on the world stage. He further added that the growth of the Optimizer HQ has been a rapid one, which is an important step for the company as for its achievement.
The growth of the company is just starting, as Optimizer HQ has acquired an Auckland based motion graphics company. The company is named Desaign and this is just one of the purchases soon to come after the Frankfurt listing. This makes Kumar amongst the youngest CEOs listed on the Deutsche Boerse, second only to Puma’s current CEO Jochen Zeitz.
