Gran Canaria is capital of the Spanish island group, the Canary Islands. It is an island with an astonishing variety of extraordinary scenery and a wide choice of popular resorts. Gran Canaria has it all, from the dry arid areas in the south, to the steep mountains with lush, tropical vegetation in the north. Thousands of banana-trees grow on the the cliffs of El Puerto de la Nieves and de la Aldea, next to the rugged ravines of Tirajana, Moya and Azuaje, which gently slope towards the sea.
While the natural scenery is outstanding, the Las Palmas is a vibrant and modern city, which boasts impressive architecture in the old area of Vegueta. The city’s gothic-neo-Classical cathedral was built in the 15th century, while the stately homes of the Gran Canarian capital with private court yards and artistically worked balconies face the narrow streets and sheltered squares. Columbus House was the residence of the first governors of the island, a beautiful building housing a museum that contains collections of artefacts left by the Guanches, the pre-Spanish inhabitants of the Canary Islands.
Get a feel for the local culture in Doramas Park, an attractive area of greenery where you can enjoy popular dances and songs on some nights of the week in the ‘Canary Village’, an excellent example of Canarian architecture created by the artist Nestor. The art and culture of the city are certainly a big attraction, but many people on holiday in Gran Canaria are content with nothing more than sun, sea and sand to wile away the hours. The 2.5 kilometre Las Canteras beach is a lovely stretch of sand that enjoys the baking heat of the sun throughout the year, and is just one of several superb beaches on the island.
Outside the main city, coastal resorts such as Telde, Aguimes, San Augustin among many others offer an attractive and relaxed Gran Canaria holiday experience. Being blessed with long sandy beaches and outstanding resort infrastructure, they host vast numbers of fun and sun loving Brits on an annual basis. Accommodation in Gran Canaria has enough variation to suit most tastes and budgets, from large hotels and apartments to more discreet and personal bungalows and villas.
Quite simply, holidays in Gran Canaria are something of crowd pleaser, with enough diversity to put the island on anyone’s list of holiday possibilities, but this should not be allowed to detract from its appeal. Despite having that ‘something for everyone’ status that can sometimes be viewed negatively, a Gran Canaria holiday is a genuine winner because it is genuinely a great place to be.
