Moving to South America from the supposed developed countries entails some major life change. Regardless of the reason for the sudden move, be it for business or for pleasure, there needs to be some preparation in taking the plunge, regardless of the final destination.

1. Being Informed. Reading about the place where you would eventually be going is important. Be the source be the Internet or printed guidebooks or other reading material, any sort of information would help. It would also help to seek out advice from people who have actually been to the area. Before making a decision, it would be best to go to the country to taste the air for your self. Avoid going on tours but find out for yourself the naked underbelly of the country where you would want to be located in the future.

2. Finding Mentors. Being a foreigner in a foreign land would mean you would be sticking out like a sore thumb amidst a throng. Befriend a bilingual local or a long time resident in order to have someone helping you acclimatize to your new surroundings. A good mentor can help you with the dos and don’ts of the country especially the most important things to learn in the country.

3. Choosing Carefully. When in the country, looking for your future residence would be quite a difficult decision to make. Thus, choosing carefully must be done with great thought and not during a rush. The area must not only be open to accepting foreigners but also where you would feel comfortable. Also, being reticent to the locals may make you safer than being sorry later on.

4. Treading Carefully. Being in a tropical country would mean a different rhythm and beat compared to your country of origin. You must have an oversupply of patience to be able to survive without getting a coronary in South America. Also, the pace is a lot slower, with people coming in late for appointments and the long siestas together with the local sense of humor must be imbibed carefully to avoid blowing a fuse each and every time.

5. Appreciate the Area. There must be a reason why you one-upped and left your old stomping grounds for this new country. Appreciate the little things in your new home country, such as nature, the people, the women or the food. There must be a reason for all this and why you chose this life and reminding yourself of such reasons can only help to make your choice all the more sweet.
