Panama a Favored Destination

Moving to Panama is not easy. Here are tips on how to move to the country without much hassle.

Panama a Favored Destination

Bobby Castro is the online editor at Gringos, where he has published a number of articles about moving to Panama and many other topics.

In recent years, Panama has become a favored destination for vacations and relocation. Many expatriates from all over the world, not just North America, have become increasingly interested in living in the country. While the country has its many own beneficial effects, its proximity to both the East Coast and the West Coast is what makes this country an attractive retirement or vacation destination.

The country has many beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the country, since Panama as an isthmus straddles both great oceans. Panama has also become an international business hub aside from generating revenue from its Canal operations. The Panama Canal has allowed business, transportation and telecommunications to flourish and develop in this country. The country is considered as the most highly industrialized country in the region and third most developed in all of Latin America.

There are many ways that an expatriate can enter the country, which are as follows:

1. Tourist Pensioner Visa.
2. Private Income Retiree Visa.
3. Small Business Investor Visa.
4. Temporary Immigrant Visa.
5. Student Visa.

Each of the specific visas mentioned above have their requirements in order to be obtained. Once obtained, the country’s coastlines, climate and culture is open for one to experience fully.

There are still a myriad of tasks that need to be done in order to make the move to Panama much smoother. These are as follows:

1. Finding the house in the city or the suburbs that one would call home;
2. Cleaning the house and making it your home;
3. Notifications as to the change of address;
4. Replication and submission of important documentation;
5. Securing supplies for your new home and finding replacement supplies for the home;

Pets can also be allowed entry into the country. The process is simple but the rules are quite strict. Documents such as veterinary certification from the country origin verified by the Panamanian consulate and in home quarantine at least two weeks prior to arrival.

As for moving household items and other personal property, there is still a need to obtain proper legal documentation in order to deal with customs agents. Another issue would be finding a respectable and reputable moving company to carry the items into the country. It is recommended instead to purchase personal effects in country and find a real estate company where furnished accommodations can be contained.

While many Panamanians can speak English, the main language is still Spanish. Thus, it is best to learn conversational Spanish before arriving in the country. Also, learning about the nuances of the culture as well as learning about the local cuisine would certainly help the acclimatization process go better at a quicker pace.
