Taking into consideration that the vast majority of countries around the world are currently exiting a global recession, Australia has been somewhat unaffected by the entire event. Whilst many countries have seen unemployment rates soar due to companies going into administration or liquidation, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rates in Australia over the last 12 month period decreased once again, with the current rate standing at 5.4 percent.
Relatively satisfying themselves, compare these figures to the United Kingdom where the Office for National Statistics reports that unemployment in the final quarter of 2009 stood at 7.8 percent, a figure which had not changed in six months and it is obvious that Australia is sailing out of the recession almost completely unaffected.
So what does this mean for those looking to migrate to Australia?
In essence, it actually means that very little has changed over the past couple of years and Australia is still one of the most popular countries to move to, in respect of skilled, professional and non-skilled immigrants.
As very little has changed in respect of immigration and employment opportunities, it means that there is still a vast amount of occupations that require filling, with vacancies available in a substantial amount of skilled and professional occupations for those moving to Australia
For example, on the Critical Occupation List (known as the COL, it was initially produced by the Australian Immigration Department in 2008), some of the most in demand professions are those in the health industry. General Medical Practitioners, Psychiatrists, Registered Midwifes and Surgeons all feature on the list, as do Gynecologists, Podiatrists, Sonographers and Radiologists.
Whilst there are other industries included on the COL, the health sector is the one that is most popular with many Britons looking to immigrate to Australia, particularly those that are newly qualified in their chosen medical field. Moving to Australia temporarily throughout their studies is something that is so often done by medical students, helping them to gain experience in an environment other than that which they are primarily used to and is enjoyed to such an extent that many return later in their life to work and live in the country permanently.
Of course, should you not fall into the category of being a skilled or professional worker on any of the lists that the immigration department publish (which should be checked thoroughly, as some of the occupations, such as a wall or floor tiler, are not expected by many to be included), it must be remembered that this is not the be all and end all. There are thousands of people who immigrate to Australia each year without being a skilled professional, but who manage to secure an employment opportunity in a sector that is suitable to them.
Many people ask the question that how can a country as vast as Australia have such a low unemployment rate and require so many jobs? The truth is, the size of Australia is no more than a perception, as whilst the country may cover almost 3,000,000 square miles, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it actually only has a population of 22,100,000. This makes it the 6th largest country in the world by size but only 55th in terms of its population and displays that the potential economic growth in the country is substantial, resulting in what could be a tremendous amount of jobs over the coming years.
