Much of the credit for the popularity of Mauritius as a preferred holiday destination should go to its many high class and top quality hotels. This progress is all the more creditable when one considers that in the early 70s and 80s this place was just being made ready to embrace tourism and hotels built in those times did not conform to any standard specifications. Each was different from the other and you could not compare them. However, since then rapid standardisation has taken place and the hotels built from then (on some of the best and pristine beaches in the world) not only are of the highest standards but also boast of equally excellent service from well trained personnel. This has been the key differentiator and contributing factor to the success of Mauritius as a preferred vacation destination.
Despite the fact that there is no official rating system followed by the authorities and most hotels have their own benchmarks that they follow as per international norms, they have managed to sustain the excellence in service levels through regular training and motivational programs that they have been imparting to their staff.
This fixation on, and enthusiasm for, maintaining top standards of service has been reflected in the number of 4-star as well as 5-star hotels that you can see around Mauritius. There are less 3-star hotels since most of the hotel properties have believed in upgrading the services and have increased the facilities in order to make the stay of tourists comfortable and relaxing. Despite the proliferation of hotels and resorts and increased room capacity, occupancy rate has been a healthy 80 per cent in the existing hotels.
So what is the peak period of tourism and when should you make your bookings for accommodation in Mauritius hotels?
Well, though the last couple of years has seen some drop in tourism due to the global recession, the period between 20th of December and the first fifteen days of January remain the most vibrant and you would do well to make your bookings well in advance, at least a couple of months before so that you not only get the accommodation of choice but can also avail of some early bird discounts offered by some of the hotels.
If you are interested in visiting the place at other times, then there is no urgency in making advance bookings though here again it is recommended you make your plans early enough to take advantage of special discounts. If you have made up your mind to make the trip, then it makes sense to do the bookings and take advantage of the early bird discounts. They can add up to a tidy sum.
The period June to August can be considered a dull period and you may have the advantage of not only better hotel rates but also better air travel rates. You may therefore consider off season travel too.
