It’s no question that traveling is an amazing experience. Even going only a couple miles away from your home can bring untold joy and peace of mind that only comes with leaving work for a few days. For those of you who are really adventurous, then you know that international travel is something that can deliver an amazing amount of fun and excitement for the time you spend there. There’s no shortage of amazing countries to visit, so you can really look forward to having an amazing trip abroad no matter where you are going. However, there are some things to consider before going on any trip. And traveling internationally is no different. One of the most important things you’ll need to do before going to a foreign country is to make sure that you understand the laws of the land. Otherwise, you could find yourself in serious trouble.

Many travelers from the United States like to think that simply because they are an American, the laws abroad don’t apply to them. While in some countries, that are largely dependent on tourism as their main source of income, you’ll be treated with kid gloves, this isn’t always the case. And many countries have laws that don’t exist in your home country. So if you go jet setting around the world thinking that all the laws are going to be the same, you might be in for a shocking experience.

As a corollary, by breaking some of the laws in foreign countries, you might be exposing yourself to some harsh penalties. A famous case many years ago of a teen in Singapore comes to mind. His crime was graffiti, but the punishment was a harsh caning. This is much different than what you’d expect in the western world. So keep in mind that if you do happen to break a law, you might be punished much more severely that you would in your home country.

If you do get into trouble, calling the ambassador’s office might not do you any good. They may sympathize with you, but they can’t really tell the cops to simply let you go. In many cases, they can’t even provide legal counsel, because that requires licensing in the host country. So if you find yourself in the slammer, you won’t be able to depend on anybody but yourself.

So it’s a good idea to find out the laws where you are going, before you go. That way, you’ll be sure to have a safe trip and not step on anybody’s toes. And you won’t project the image of an ugly, selfish traveler who cares not one whit of the country they are traveling to.

So as you can see, it’s very important to follow the laws in any country you are visiting. You’ll stay out of jail, and you’ll have a good time.
