Liking Me Some Lisbon Nightlife

Portugal may be one of the bastions of Roman Catholicism in Europe, next to Italy and Spain, but it has not tempered the love of the night that Lisboans possess in great abundance. (No offense to Roman Catholics, of course) In fact, Lisbon is known all over Europe for having one of the richest, most varied and most entertaining nightlife especially with its pubs, bars and clubs.

And you don’t even have to wait for the stars to make their appearance in the skies because nightlife in Lisbon starts as soon as the sun touches the horizon. You and your friends can start the night by meeting up on a cafe where delicious dinner selections are yours for the taking. Spend the day talking, smoking and drinking while watching life go by as you wait for the bars and pubs to open up and start the parties rolling. Go to the areas known as Chiado and Baixa for excellent cafes in town.
Even when you are planning to go bar-hopping on your last night in town, you must never miss out on the experience of going to a fado club. For those not in the know, the fado is the Portuguese songs of sorrow – a source of national pride, indeed. Just beware that you are not allowed to carry on a conversation, much less have a party. Still, it is an experience not to be missed so it is all worth it. Go to the Bairro Alto and Alfama quarters for the best fado shows and artists in Lisbon.
Did we mention, too, that Lisbon is home to an emerging gay and lesbian scene? Indeed, Lisbon may be one of the most closeted cities in liberal Europe where homosexuality is concerned but it is increasingly opening its doors. You can now find as many as 10 gay bars in the Principe Real district, all of which welcome both the heterosexual and homosexual population. Just don’t expect them to be as gay as the bars, clubs and pubs found in Amsterdam and Berlin and you should be alright.
Going back to the Bairro Alto district, you can find all sorts of entertainment venues that play host to lovers of reggae, Goth, hip hop and even heavy metal music. Just hop from one bar to the next to find something that will suit your tastes and you are sure to find one in a short time. Better yet, there is no law in the country that says you cannot go on a private pub crawl of your own so just do it.
You will most often be served imperial beer, which is the Portuguese equivalent of drauight beer. Or you can always go for the more expensive caipirinhas and caipiroscas, the vodla cocktails and other local drinks to satisfy your alcoholic thirst.
Just remember to keep it all in your stomach. As liberated as the Lisboans may seem on the outside, there are social conventions that must be respected including drinking what you can carry back to your holiday apartment. (Of course, your holiday apartment should have been booked well in advance preferably through online sites).
