Staying awake on the road during a long trip can be significantly challenging if you are sleepy and if you have been driving for a while. It is best to avoid taking this risk, because there are plenty of healthier alternatives out there. The first healthy alternative that you may want to try is playing some music.

Listening to something slow and melodic may put you to sleep, so you may want to avoid listening to that kind of music. However, something upbeat and cheerful can help you stay awake.

You will also want to consider participating in the music. Start singing along, tapping your foot, and so forth.

This kind of physical activity, even though you are not running around, can stimulate your brain enough to keep you awake. It can also help you start breathing deeper and more actively.

The added oxygen can refresh you and help your mind to begin working more clearly. The movement can also keep you awake by getting your blood going.

When your blood moves around your body it will help it to prevent relaxing too much. Another thing that you can do that many people do not think of is that you can play music yourself while you are driving.

For example, if you have ever wanted to learn how to play the harmonica, this may be your time to practice. If you are a drummer, you can one handed practice some complicated rhythms while you are traveling.

You may be able to practice more in a more focused setting here in the car than you have been able to anywhere else for a long time. Other things like congas, a kazoo, and so forth can also liven your trip enough to prevent sleep.

The second thing you may want to consider doing is stopping for a few minutes to get some exercise. If you drive by a park, you may want to consider jumping out and running around it a few times to wake yourself up.

Exercise can really stimulate your body and wake up your mind. It also offers several other benefits that can improve your overall healthy.

By getting your blood flowing and your breathing rate up, you will be able to significantly reduce your temptation to fall asleep. You may even be able to successfully perform some breathing exercises used in yoga while you are driving to help wake yourself up.

You can even flex various muscle groups while you are sitting in order to get some exercise and wake yourself up. Another thing you may want to try doing is practicing something else.

For example, you can practice speaking slowly and clearly. This can help you tremendously later when you are giving a business lecture or lesson.

While you are driving, practice delivering stories, poems or ideas in an interesting and clear manner. If you are by yourself, you may want to consider talking to yourself about your problems and start trying to come up with solutions.

On the other hand, if you are traveling with other people, you may want to tell them the stories and practice delivering it to them. These other people will also be able to talk to you and keep you awake.
