One of the most exciting ways to take a vacation is to go on an African safari. Much more up close and personal than the zoo, and much more exciting and realistic than private game reserves, safaris provide something that you will scarcely get somewhere else. A true honest look at the dog eat dog, survival of the fittest world that everybody lives in. Of course, safaris are dangerous, and if you aren’t careful, you could be eaten by a lion. Of course, most people come back from safaris with nothing but amazing memories and dreams of going again. That doesn’t meant that you can take off without a care. You’ve got to do some planning in order to make sure nothing bad happens.

The first thing you’ll need to do is double check all of your passports and other required documents. Not only will you need to get visas for several of the countries in which you can experience a true safari, you’ll need to get permission from local governments, as you’ll be venturing into protected territory. You’ll also have to sign a release saying that if you get stampeded by zebras, you won’t be able to sue them.

Getting travel insurance is a good idea no matter where you go, but if you’re going on safari, then you should get extra health and accident coverage. You might also consider boosting your life insurance just a little bit as well. Check with your own health insurance agent and see what coverage you have, or don’t have, should something happen in Africa. Then buy whatever coverage you need through travel insurance.

Try and leave all your valuables at home. You’re basically going camping, so forget all your nice jewelry, clothes, and other things. Just bring some basic clothes, a good digital camera with plenty of storage, and your cell phone (If you’re lucky, this can be the same thing). You really don’t need anything else, as it will be provided for you.

Since you’ll likely be staying at a higher altitude for a couple weeks, check with your doctor make sure there’s nothing you need to do to prepare. Usually, this isn’t a problem, but some pre-existing conditions require special preparations for going into high altitude environments.

Since you’ll be exposing yourself to a whole new world of bacteria, you’ll need to get some shots before you go. Check with your doctor to see what you need to get.

A safari can be an amazing trip, so long as nothing goes wrong. When you take the steps prescribed above, you’ll be in pretty good shape. Just be sure to take nothing but pictures, and leave nothing but footprints.
