Choosing the type of car to rent probably causes the most problems for anyone, whether you’re renting a car, are a car rental broker, or a rental company. Why? Because size is such a subjective matter. Most rental companies split their cars up into size groups. These size groups are then sometimes split into further sub-groups. As an example, the most rented size car is usually called an ‘Economy’. This is a basic car size (not the smallest, quite) and can come in further sub-groups based on the number of doors, whether it has aircon, is an automatic transmission or station wagon-type.

The problem arises when you have a party traveling and want a car that will carry four adults comfortably. Do you book a Compact? An Economy? An Intermediate? The choice can be frustrating because the size is subjective. Some may travel with too much luggage, and some will travel lightly. Some passengers need more space for comfort while others need bigger windows. But the biggest problem that usually arises is when the cost is being split within the group and some may want to spend as little money as possible while others wish to spend the extra money on comfort.

Choose a group of rental car that will satisfy as many passengers as possible. Make sure your group takes into consideration the necessary space for luggage. If a member of your party is prone to motion sickness, make sure they have a seat next to a window that opens. Fresh, moving air helps calm the sensation of feeling sick. Be sensitive to each other’s budget, especially in this economy and reserve the most financially friendly car available.

One of the most overlooked and potential problems is trunk space. Even if the car is comfortable to travel in it may not hold all of your party’s luggage. In this instance you may need to up the size of your car or have a roof rack to take the extra suitcases. It will depend on how far you have to travel with the luggage. If it’s only a short distance, it would probably be suitable to utilize the roof rack. If the distance is greater, though, you may wish to reserve a larger group of car, or even two cars of the smallest designation.

Minivans can be very misleading in what people think about when they reserve one. While they may carry seven people comfortably, they won’t carry seven people’s luggage! The best thing to do here is to rent an extra car for the first and last day of your group’s holiday to help with the luggage, as most rental companies do not allow roof racks on minivans or buses. Minivans are only appropriate for local transportation, not touring from location to location. So, if your itinerary includes moving from city to city, you may wish to opt for a larger vehicle such as an SUV, or two smaller cars, whichever is friendlier to your party’s budget.
