Egypt is a country with a rich history stretching farther back into the midst of time than almost any other civilization on Earth. While Europeans were still wearing untanned hides and trying to figure out the mystery of fire, Egypt had developed a complex civilization, complete with a written language, a rich religious tradition, and a stable government with a working bureaucracy. Their mastery of the building arts can still be marveled at to this day. If you want to get in touch with the very origins of civilization, you should plan a holiday to Luxor, Egypt. Below, we are going to tell you about holidays to luxor…
Luxor is in the southern, or upper, part of Egypt. It may better known by its ancient name of Thebes, an Anglicization of the Greek and Roman name for the city. It was the capital through much Egypt’s pre-Grecian history, starting in the 11th dynasty in two thousand BC, and continuing up until about three hundred BC. Luxor is where you will find the Valley of the Kings and King Tut’s famous tomb, as well as temples dedicated to Amon-Ra and a host of other Egyptian gods.
Because there is very little rainfall, these monuments have been preserved for thousands of years and have earned Luxor the title of “the world’s largest open air museum.”
Every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists come to vacation in Luxor. If you think that you might enjoy that as well, there is plenty for you to enjoy.
Most of the ancient Egyptian monuments are on the West Bank, a short ferry or boat ride across the river from the main city. You can take a guided tour of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens.
Even more spectacular is the chance to take a hot air balloon trip over these and other stunning sights. There are several companies in Luxor offering this service.
On the East Bank, a visit to the beautifully preserved Karnak Temple should be accompanied by trips to the air conditioned Luxor Museum and Mummification Museum. You’ll want a break from the heat, because even in the dead of winter Luxor’s temperature is still seventy five during that day. It reaches well over one hundred degrees during the summer. Despite the heat, there are so many sights to see in ancient Thebes that holidays to Luxor are quickly becoming one of the top travel destinations for tourists around the globe.

I went to Luxor in September and it was amazing! The people were helpful and warm (once you’ve battled past the immeasurably annoying kalesh drivers) and the sights incredible. Check out Heritage Key, for whom I write, for a ton of great articles and travel tips on Luxor and its ancient history.
