If you are planning on taking a holiday this year, why not plan it during a holiday at your destination? In other words, plan your vacation during the festive time of the place you are planning on visiting. Things might be a bit more hectic, but they will also be a lot more fun. All around the world there are many and varied festivals that take place throughout the year. If you can coordinate your travel plans with one of those festivals you will be assured an unforgettable experience. In Egypt, there are many holidays celebrating both modern Muslim Egypt as well as ancient Theban Egypt. They are all held during the cool winter months. If you are planning on traveling to Luxor anyway, try to go during the holidays in Luxor.

One of the biggest festivals in Luxor is the Festival of Opet. It has taken place since ancient times right before the Nile floods. At this time and ancient kings and queens would take a boat trip on the Nile to reassert their right to rule.

This procession would be accompanied by all the courtiers of the city and become quite spectacular. While the religious tone has been lost over the years, there is still a Festival of Opet every year in which the Nile is full of proudly decorated boats and the streets are full of music and dance.

Abu El Haggag Moulid is celebrated in the two weeks before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It is celebrated to commemorate the spiritual retreat built by a famous Luxor Sheik in during the middle ages.

During this festival there are two days of street festivities. Just by walking around you will see choreographed fights, dances, music, horse races, and pageants held on boats. When the whole town comes alive with celebration there is no better time to visit that city.

There are also secular festivals that celebrate Luxor and its rich cultural heritage as well as a day devoted entirely to King Tutankhamen, arguably Luxor’s most famous citizen.

During this time you’ll be able to see precious treasures that are normally stored out of sight as well as get a chance to purchase some less precious artifacts. These are just a sampling of the holidays in Luxor that you might get the chance to experience firsthand if you plan your holiday during the holiday time.
