With The Palace of Knossus and the Historical Museum of Crete are two must see attractions when holidaying on the island. The Palace of Knossus in particular dates back to the Bronze Age where it was a Minoan place of ceremonial and political importance. After being excavated there now stands a recreation of the palace at the site so you can see what archaeologists envisage the palace looked like many, many years ago.

If you are after a decent beach to sun yourself on the Ammoundara Beach close to Heraklion is ideal, unlike many beaches in the Mediterranean some tourists have commented that they are relatively quiet during the day so you’ll have plenty of space, in the evenings the area especially the main road can be really busy so make sure you time your trips well to avoid delays.
