Hawaii of the Atlantic? You Decide!

Often places receive quirky nicknames that are indications of what you can expect from it and while 'Hawaii of the Atlantic' may sound generous, it is in fact pretty apt.

Hawaii of the Atlantic? You Decide!

The subtropical paradise of Gran Canaria is a sight to behold and having never been to Hawaii I can honestly say it is a million times better. Bias journalism perhaps isn’t the best way to convince people of certain views, but in this case I have little option. The ancient volcanic origin of Gran Canaria provide it with the unique landscape which tourists enjoy today, plus the fact it has various types of terrain which have often seen it referred to as a miniature continent. Towards the south is where you can expect to experience all the great weather and sandy shores whereas as the northern regions have more forests and blooming flora to enjoy.

The beauty of Gran Canaria is not contained in just one area and that is pretty much the reasoning behind my argument as to why it blows Hawaii out of the water. Both share the great ability to maintain great weather all year long which means that you can get a tan over Christmas which would certainly make a change. Of course as both are way out in the ocean they are not exempt of some more extreme periods of weather, but you are generally alerted to this well in advance or failing that join the hoards of screaming fleeing locals.

In the summertime when the weather is hot temperatures can reach right up to around 40C in Gran Canaria and that is all thanks to Africa. The warm winds from the scorched Sahara desert blow over to the island over summer and this increase the temperatures greatly, at this time you will be thankful that there is an Ocean surrounding you to cool down in. While Hawaii enjoys constant hot weather it rarely reaches the highs of what Gran Canaria often experiences, 1-0.

Enjoy your own sand dune south of Maspalomas, well it isn’t your own but you get what I mean. Walk to dunes as if in some sort of deserted land, then appear at a very lively beach with tremendous water sports for all the family. If you venture a little too far north on the beach beware! There is a nudist beach located along the coast so keep your eyes peeled, or closed, whatever works best for you.
There are plenty of modern resorts along the coast of Gran Canaria to enjoy too but many people do prefer to become one with nature, whether that be relaxing at the beach or hiking through the scenic forests which climb the up to the highest peak of the island Pico de las Nieves.
