The beginning history is a blending of the original people of Spain, the Ibero-Celtics and the Phoenicians, Carthagenians and the ancient Greeks. It’s Greek name was Elybirge and the Romans called Illiberis.

The most significant development was the settling of the Moorish Al Andalus in 711. The Moors did maintain the Roman infrastructure as much as possible. Nearby, a group of Jewish people settled and called their area, Gamata, Gamata al yahud, Granada of the Jews. The Moorish city in the meantime was destroyed in the year 1010. As they rebuilt, the Jewish settling was incorporated into the larger city and this is how it has come to be called Granada today.

The Nasrids were the longest lasting Muslim rulers of Spain. They became friendly with the King, Ferdinand III, and became recognized as the tributary state in 1238. It was then called the Emirate of Granada. They supplied troops for the King and they shared connections for trade. This stopped in 1492 when Boabdil, or Emir Muhammad XII, the Moorish sultan at the time, gave control to Ferdinand II and his wife Queen Isabella when the Granada War was lost.

The agreement was to allow the Moorish to remain and continue in their faith and customs. Eventually, the Cardinal grew impatient and began to force the inhabitants into Christian baptisms. They created the Converso to convert the Moors and the Jews. They revolted in 1501. As a result, they ruled that they must either convert or leave the city or else be executed. Some stayed and converted, many left the city and others stayed and practiced their religion of choice in secret.

Some of the beautiful Muslim buildings were destroyed but many can still be seen. The complex and garden of Alhambra and the Generalife are still a number one attraction for the city visits. When first built, the Moorish poets called it the pearl set in emeralds because the buildings were surrounded by the lush woods all around. Here you will find some contrasting building styles because it took so long to build the entire complex.

Sacromonte is a neighborhood known for its cave houses dug into the mountain hillsides. It was originally home to the Gitanos and is now a great place to find authentic flamenco singing and dancing. Granada was the host of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996 and continues to be a popular European tourist destination.
