First settled by the Ibero-Celtic at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains where the Darro and Genil rivers meet, Granada grew to become the unique city we know as today. Granada has a rich history that can still be seen throughout the streets and in particular districts in the city. Visiting in the spring or fall you will find the weather to be sunny and warm, perfect for exploring the city.
Through the early history of Granada it was ruled by several different countries including Greek and Roman, each new ruler changed the name of the city. Eventually the city came under Moorish rule and the city prospered and grew. During this time, the older Roman infrastructure was repaired and extended while at the same time bringing new crops and better agricultural practices.
Later the city became an important trade port, especially for gold. Eventually the city came under attack from Spanish forces and after several years the city surrendered. This marked a great change in the history of the city and a change in religious views. Sadly during this change Jews and Muslims were forced to convert or leave the city.
Luckily the Moorish heritage left behind is still found in many places throughout the city. This is particularly true of the Albaicin district in Granada. This section of the city is a World Heritage Site. Here you can see amazing sites like original Moorish houses and an Arab bath complex remains. The archeological museum is also here exhibiting artifacts from all the periods of Granada. In this section of the city you will be able to see incredible views of the Alhambra on the opposite hill.
The Alhambra was the seat of rule for the Moorish rulers and is known for its gardens and architecture. From this incredible building you can see amazing views of the city as well. Initially a small castle, it has been added to many times since it was originally built. Because of all the additions to the castle, many rooms and even sections seem to oppose another section.
Evidence shows that the castle we recognize today was the final building process from the Nasrid Dynasty. The building was abandoned and forgotten for many years but after being re-discovered in the 19th century restorations to the building began and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Sacromonte district of the city is characterized by the cave houses dug into the hillside. This is a major area for dancing, in particular the Zambra Gitana an Andalusian dance from the Middle East. Songs are sung and danced by almost every family living here, some is done from the houses for a private feel and others are done on small outdoor stages.
For great food the Bib-Rambla district has it all. Tantalize your taste buds with authentic cuisines from around the world. From Arabic to Spanish, try as many different dishes that you can while you visit Granada. Every dish is artfully prepared and it may be difficult to choose what was your favorite dish overall.
As you plan your incredible trip to Granada make sure you book a holiday apartment online. By choosing a holiday apartment, not only do you save money compared to typical hotels but you get to feel like you are at a home away from home. Plus you get all the amenities that you would have at a hotel. With all the money you will save, spend more time enjoying the food, sights, and entertainment of Granada.
