When thinking about Egypt it’s sometimes hard to move away from the stereotypical images of pyramids, ancient monuments and a vast amount of sand! For years Egypt has attracted visitors wanting to explore the world of ‘Ancient Egypt’ that we are so accustomed to. However beyond the archaeological treats lies a country steadily developing into a modern, cosmopolitan destination. The stereotyped image is one that Egyptian tourism websites are striving to move away from, with many companies describing the tourism experience as a modern haven for activities such as diving, cruises and a lively, sophisticated nightlife.
As a country that has become accustomed to mass tourism, it is no surprise that Egypt plays host to a wide variety of accommodation choices. From luxury hotels to resorts on the banks of the River Nile, there seems to be a bed for every budget. Cairo boasts a selection of 5 star hotels run by international chains with facilities and service are commonly found in top European destinations. For budget travellers there’s even a selection of campsites and youth hostels, perfect for gap year students or those looking for a cheap adventure!
The Egyptian resorts take accommodation to another level, places such as Sharm el-Sheikh offer lavish accommodation for prices that most would not have expected! For less than a usual 4 star hotel, these resorts offer international restaurants, spas and a multitude of entertainment packages.
Something that definitely does not stick to the Ancient Egypt image is the increasing amount of nightlife spots around the country. It seems that Egypt comes alive at, with clubbers coming out of clubs during the early hours of the morning and taking advantage of street vendors selling local food. Cairo hosts a wide range of sophisticated nightclubs, discos and even casinos. Boats cruise the Nile offering BBQs and cheap drinks with belly-dancers providing the evening’s entertainment. Ancient Egypt meets modern Egypt during one of the main night time attraction, spectacular light and sound shows are performed over the country’s famous archaeological sites.
Modern Egypt has also become a haven for those that enjoy indulging in some traditional retail therapy. When browsing the bazaars, haggling is still an encouraged practice as most goods do not have a fixed price. A vast variety of jewellery, clothing and reproduction antiques are available from these street vendors at sometimes discount prices. Alongside the traditional bazaars, there are also modern shopping centres available for those that want to search for well known labels.
Egypt is turning into a hotspot for holiday makers wanting to experience luxury and excitement alongside the history of this ancient country. Cairo especially seems to provide a healthy mix of the traditional and modern, with aspects of the city that would not look out of place in any western destination. With a state of the art opera house, luxurious big chain hotels and shopping malls it seems that Egypt has reached a modern, cosmopolitan period of its history. Perhaps this healthy medium is one that should always be kept in a constant balance, embracing the modern developments whilst always appreciating the majesty of the ancient culture? With some holiday destinations lacking in one or the other, Egypt seems to have an advantage in the tourism market!
