Florianpolis is a Brazilian city, capital of the state of Santa Catarina since 1823, located on the island of Santa Catarina.
Inhabited before colonization by the Tupi-Guarani Indians, then by some deserters to maritime shipping, the city was founded around 1675 by Francisco Dias Velho, in the name of Nossa Senhora do Desterro (literally “Our Lady of the Exile” in French, referring to the patron saint of the locality), thus initiating the occupation of the island.
On March 23, 1726, the colony was elevated to vila. It was not until 1747 that Florianapolis underwent its first major wave of immigration. Between 1747 and 1756, about 5000 from the Portuguese Azores archipelago came to settle on the island and the coastline of the state. Many fishing villages of the island still bear the memory of this immigration.
In the second half of the eighteenth century until the late nineteenth century, the town was active in whaling. In 1823, at independence, the city became the capital of the province of Santa Catarina, which inaugurates a period of prosperity, driven by investment of federal power. Political life is modernizing and cultural activities are developing, particularly as a result of the visit of Emperor Pedro II in 1845.
The name of Florianpolis was given in 1894 in honor of Marshal Floriano Peixoto.
The first name given to the city was “Meiembipe”, name given by the Indians who lived there Carijas before European colonization. With the arrival of Francisco Dias Velho, a colony is called the “Nossa Senhora do Desterro” or simply “Desterro”. After the defeat of the federalist forces during the Federalist Revolution (1893-1895), it becomes permanently “Florianapolis, by name Floriano Peixoto, head of the Brazilian State. The city is also popularly known as “Floripa”.
