The southern islands of Singapore offer a very relaxing environment that can be visited by boat, but it’s the history of the area that makes it so attractive to visitors as well as Singapore’s locals. There are eight islands that were uninhabited south of the shores of Singapore. Over the course of 15 years, Singapore took action to reclaim the islands and turn them into the closest thing to paradise most people will ever step foot into.
This renovation of the islands took more than 15 years of planning and hard work. The project cost the country more than $300 million dollars, since they had to run electrical and water lines underwater and they even imported trees, sand and other things that a paradise cannot be without. The three main islands of Pulau Seringat, Lazarus Island, and St. John Island were all connected together as well so visitors can easily wander from one to the next during day trips. There is also a lagoon between Lazurus Island Pulau Seringat that offers a spectacular view of the sea.
All the hard work has paid off because the southern islands are now extremely popular for day trips. Visitors from around the world as well as right from the mainland of Singapore enjoy cruising south on luxurious boats to see this paradise on earth.
Pulau Seringat
This island is considered an extension of Lazarus Island because they are connected and share the lagoon that sits between them. This is the first stop off for many cruise ships that take people out to the islands for day trips. Most trips will allow you to unload from the boat here to enjoy a dip in the lagoon before venturing off onto the adjoining Lazarus and St. John islands.
Besides the lagoon, you can sun in the sand enjoy the numerous coconut trees on this island. The amazing thing is that the sand and coconut trees were actually imported onto the island. This doesn’t take away from the exotic beauty of the island, which has the feel of a real uninhabited island straight from television. The only difference is it’s not just a scene for TV and the movies. It’s real!
Fishing is extremely popular on this island as well as on Lazarus Island. People come from all over to catch reef fish or just to get in the water and look at the beautiful fauna and flora.
Lazarus Island
This island is considered one with Pulau Seringat, so you can enjoy all the same attractions that were mentioned above. The catch is that Lazarus Island has been under construction and is not always considered safe for visitors. There will be signs up advising when it is or is not safe to visit the island. If you go on a day trip with a boat touring you in, they will advise you of where you can go on the island to see the beauty of the surroundings without putting yourself in the middle of a construction zone.
St. John Island
This is one of the most fun islands for families to visit. You can run wild on the soccer fields or take time out for a picnic in the grass. There are trails to head off into the trees for a walk but you can also enjoy the beach. A dip in one of the lagoons is a must experience as well.
There is also a bungalow that can be rented out if you want to stay on St. John Island overnight!
