Depending on their age, bring things like coloring books, comic books, hand held video games, and even card games and board games. These will help them pass the time.
One way to do this is to treat your road trip like Christmas. Bring each kid their own toy, and wrapped in special wrapping paper. They can only open the toy after they’ve been on the road for a couple hours. Make sure they won’t be disappointed. That way, they’ll look forward to road trips for many years to come.
A great way to keep their attention is to bring them their own DVD player. These are pretty cheap, so you can get one for each kid. Make sure you get them the ones with head phone jacks, so they don’t drive you crazy while you are trying to drive across the country.
Food is also important. Make plenty of small bags filled with a couple of snacks, and then give them out every hour or so. This will keep them from eating too much, and will also keep them from making a big mess. If you open a huge box of cookies and hand it to the back seat, they will quickly create a disaster zone.
One thing to watch out for is to make sure they don’t drink too much. If you give them free reign over the liquid refreshments, you’ll be making stops every twenty minutes. Get some of those boxes of juice, and hand them out every couple hours or so.
When you stop to relax, make sure it’s somewhere the kids can run around and scream their heads off. Let them expend as much energy as possible before getting back into the car.
When the kids go to sleep, now’s the time to get some serious driving time in. Turn off the radio, keep the conversation low, and see how many miles you can rack up.
