As more and more reports come out as to the state of the immigration system of Australia, these indicate the desperate nature these foreigners have in seeking a life in the country. While there are some valid claims, many others have poisoned the well making many to scratch their heads as to the grant of visa asylum to these individuals.
There have been many reported fake immigration claims filed with the Australian authorities. These include a Chinese national claiming that he was Catholic but did not know the name of the current or previous Popes. Others claim that they seek asylum because of their previous criminal activity in their country of origin, often violent or drug related crimes. They think that the offer of sanctuary would not be affected in any way with their way of life in their country of origin.
According to government statistics, a total of 2,966 appeals were filed with the Refugee Review Tribunal in 2011, a great leap of over 30% compared to 2010 figures. Other visa appeals also increased in numbers, with the Migration Review Tribunal receiving 10,000 appeals in 2012 alone, nearly a quarter increase from 2011. This tribunal handles appeals for student visas, spousal visas, business visas and bridging visas. These appeals, often bereft of merit, only exacerbates the length of time through clogging of the system in order to allow the extension of their stay in Australia.
There are many major issues as to the current system. First would be the submission of incorrect or inaccurate details from the asylum seekers themselves. Another major issue is the filing of multiple appeals in the differing tribunals in order to forum shop and find a favorable ruling. Also, the current system has many loopholes and actual holes that many immigrants overstress for their benefit. The recent news report of the disappearances of some asylum seekers have alarmed many as to the security and safety of these detention centers. Because of their status, no police action to find them has been undertaken to find these lost individuals, some of whom are as young as fifteen years of age.
By playing the system, many asylum seekers have exploited loopholes that burden the Australian government as well as hamper the approval of deserving asylum seekers. While best efforts are being undertaken in order to correct these issues, the continued arrivals and multiple appeals would only serve to bog down the system with lofty goals and ideals.
