The Republic of Cuba is an island country in the Caribbean. Drowned in culture, sunny beaches and crystal clear waters, it makes an incredible holiday destination. So here is a guide to what to do, where to go and what you will need to have an enjoyable stay in Cuba.
Language
The official language of Cuba is Spanish, though many residents do speak a good amount of English. This little phrase will help you out wherever you go, so just say “Habla ingles?”, which means “Do you speak English?”.
Time Difference
Flying from the UK to Cuba is a 9 hour 40 minute journey, and will see a time difference of -5 hours GMT.
Health Insurance
All non Cuban nationals need to make sure that their medical insurance policy is fully comprehensive due to the escalated costs of medical treatment in Cuba as Cuban authorities are now asking passengers to present a copy of their medical insurance policy when they arrive.
Currency
The currency in Cuba is the Convertible Peso (CUC). Be aware that the import and export of local currency is prohibited, so take your Pounds Sterling and change it up upon your arrival.
Food
The cuisine in Cuba is a mix of Spanish and Afro-Caribbean, including rice, beans, chicken and pork.
Weather
Cuba offers a sub-tropical climate all year, though rain mostly falls between May and October due to the high humidity. The cooler months are January to April, though lightweight clothes can be worn year round due to high temperatures.
Cigars
Cuba is very well-known for making the world’s finest cigars. The factories in Havana offer the real thing and also sell ornate cigar boxes. Be careful, as cigars from street vendors will probably be fakes or factory rejects, and may be confiscated at the airport.
Nightlife
Havana stages opera, ballet and theatre all year round and seats are very cheap for shows. You can also visit a cinema though films are usually shown in Spanish, however some may have subtitles.
Beaches
Varadero is the most famous beach in Cuba and is one of the largest resorts in the Carribean. It is known as the “Blue Beach” because of its crystal clear waters, and offers a warm, white sandy beach.
