Australia is the land down under, where kangaroos and koala bears run the streets, and the crocodiles are everywhere… right? Well, not exactly. While it is true that this land of plenty has much to offer when it comes to wild life, it is far more civilized today than many think.
The only nation that occupies an entire continent, Australia has a land mass of almost 7.7 million kilometres. It is the driest of all continents (second only to Antarctica), and is considered to be the flattest of continents. While Australia is mostly dry and arid, it also has rainforests, snowfields, and fertile croplands. One third of the continent is in the tropics.
Many people come for a visit and decide to stay in Australia. Since 1945 over six million people have made the move to this beautiful and economically stable nation. In fact the Australian government now sets annual limitations on immigrants by way of application. Australia is highly urbanized and the current population is over twenty million, the majority of which live along the south eastern corner or up along the eastern seaboard.
Wild life is diverse on this enormous continent. From the tropical rain forests to the arid desert areas, the birds, mammals, and plant life are unique to the land and many species are found to be native no where else on earth. Australia has more species of reptiles at seven hundred fifty five than any other country. Many of the various species of wild life are protected by the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 1999. Much of the land, including wetlands is considered protected and preserved to retain the various ecosystems of the continent.
Moving to Australia will be accomplished easily because English is the language of choice in Australia. The national anthem is Advance Australia Fair. As is befitting, green and gold are the national colours. There is a “national” day called Australia Day celebrated each January twenty sixth. This date marks a time in 1788 when a Captain Arthur Phillip (of the British Royal Navy) came and took possession of the eastern side of the continent in England’s name, establishing a settlement when is know today as Sydney, the largest city in Australia.
Air and ship travel make Australia an inviting destination for tourists and the economy is bolstered by them each year. Tourism is a fast growing industry for the continent. Nearly five million tourists arrived in Australia in 2002, one forth of them visiting from Japan. The continent is a warm and friendly environment that draws people who love the safe welcoming environment found there.
The Sydney Festival is an annual event which takes place in January and offers a wide variety of special talent and a wide variety of art including dance, music, and theatre, along with outdoor performing, mostly free to the public.
You can tour the continent, and then decide on where you wish to relocate to when moving to Australia. Maybe rent a vehicle and see the sites for yourself. There is so much to see it will take a lifetime, but will surely be well worth the trip.
