When it comes to either breaks in cities or having a place to stay to avoid the commute home or after a business trip, there are two common ways that people tend to use to stay in the city: apartment rentals or hotels. But which is better?
The simple answer is that it depends on your needs and tastes. Apartment rentals get a lot of positive press for their more individual feel compared to hotels: where hotel rooms, especially chain hotels, will often be all the same, a rented luxury apartment will most likely be a completely individual home from home, with unique, tasteful decor and a number of nice added extras including WiFi internet access, DVD player, TV and stereo. These are usually included in the price of rental whereas in a hotel room everything like this will tend to cost extra.
Staying in a hotel is often a fairly sterile experience; it’s tough to get away from the fact that no matter how expensive the room you are staying in is, there’s the knowledge that all the rooms of this price in this particular chain of hotels around the world are almost exactly the same. Though this is fine for a holiday or a short occasional stay over in a city, it’s often the case that regular travellers will find themselves feeling a little disassociated or delocalised; staying in a remarkably similar room in a different city night after night can be a peculiar feeling; almost like moving between a range of ‘pods’ or similar.
For a holiday, either apartment rentals or hotels are ideal, though which one you should opt for will depend on the kind of holiday you are going on and your personal tastes. It should be noted that most apartment rentals have a minimum stay of two or three nights, meaning that they aren’t much good if you are planning a hopscotch-style vacation where you only spend a night at a time in each location. In this case, it’s probably better for you to stick with hotels or hostels.
Ultimately the choice of whether to stay in a hotel room or a luxury apartment will come down entirely to the individual and what their needs are. For a short, irregular overnight stay or a holiday with many different stops, hotels can be the better option, whereas for more regular travellers or people on longer stays, renting a luxury apartment can be the far more comfortable, equipped option.
