For a holiday you will never forget you can do much worse than choose a yacht charter on the Ionian sea. This is one of the most popular destinations for sailing in the world and it’s not hard to see why. Perfect sailing conditions and a collection of islands offering secluded bays make it for a truly wonderful time.
The important thing to remember is that this may not be the vision of Greece you were expecting. If you were looking for scorching conditions and bleached white villas then think again. You’ll see a pleasant and green land speckled with red tiled buildings. Here a collection of cultures collide: French, Italian and even British. Believe it or not the locals even play cricket in Corfu.
Each yacht charter normally starts out at Corfu. This island is famous for its small isolated coves which offer great opportunities for a spot of swimming. The bays are well sheltered so conditions are almost always perfect. It is the most populace and cosmopolitan of the islands so this is a good place to enjoy a nice restaurant and a drink before you venture out.
From there you head onto the Ionian. There are seven islands overall here and they each have their own charm. As a former student of classics my eye was immediately drawn by Ithaca which, legend has it, is the home of Odysseus, although there has been some debate among archaeologists. It has many charms to offer regardless – pleasant villages and restaurants. The best time to go is in august where you’ll find the festival of Sotiros (the saviour) in which locals enjoy two days of food, wine and celebration.
There is more adventure in fishing villages of Lefkas. It is a good place for any yacht charter to rest and pick up supplies. The coves provide good opportunities for fishing, while the taverns offer good food and drink.
From there it’s back out into the Ionian where you can enjoy relaxing as you drift noiselessly on the breeze. At a time when so many people seem obsessed with extreme sports, this is a welcome break. For those who endure fast paced living the chance to take time out to float around the Ionian is not to be missed.
Prices for a week long yacht charter on the Ionian are pretty reasonable. They vary between about a thousand and four thousand pounds, depending on the type of boat and service requested. There are plenty of companies on offer so whatever your tastes you should be able to find something to suit.
