You have reached your destination bleary-eyed after a 20 hour international flight and you are irritable by the time you arrive at the hotel accommodation. You are then advised by the young lady at hotel reservations that your room isn’t ready yet. You could be forgiven for loosing your cool. It may even be justified. However, would you get the best service from the Hotel Staff at that moment, and for the remainder of your stay, with this behavior? Not likely.

Tip 1: Stay Calm & Respectful.
If you are in an agitated state, pause and take a few deep breaths. Politely explain to the the hotel staff that you are tired and could they suggest the best way for you to get comfortable until your room is ready. You may be offered a complementary drink or even an upgrade. If it isn’t offered, ask for it. Staying respectful will ensure that the hotel staff will empathise with your discomfort and will do what they can to rectify the situation.

Tip 2: Advise the Hotel Staff of Your Requirements.
Advise hotel reservations at the point of your booking of your requirements and room preferences (e.g. high floor, natural light, quiet, non-smoking), and the approximate time of your arrival. Contact the hotel reception if there is a significant delay to your arrival. This ensures that your room is kept for you and that they are ready for you when you arrive.

Tip 3: Find Out Who is on Duty.
Find out who the front Duty Manager is when checking in so that you can make sure that they look after you and your group.

Tip 4: Be Cooperative.
Return your keys when asked. Give the Front Desk reasonable notice of a late check out so that their housekeeping staff can be alerted. Be cooperative when you are asked for your details or when staff need a transaction authority.

Tip 5: Learn Names of Staff.
Whether you are dealing with Front of House, Concierge, Restaurant/ Bar staff or Housekeeping, learn their names and use them whenever possible. Complement them on a job well done. A good tip shows that their hard work is appreciated.

Tip 6: Be Gracious with Restaurant Staff.
Report any problem with food and wine to the restaurant manager in a gracious and respectful manner. He/she will communicate it to the Head Chef. Book the restaurant when making your hotel reservations if you want special seating for a special occasion. If you want to be treated as a regular, become a regular.

Tip 7: Value the Hotel Concierge.
The Hotel Concierge can get you “sold out” theatre tickets, bookings to the best restaurants, and the best tips on what’s going on around town. Be gracious and leave a good tip.

In conclusion, treat all the Hotel Staff with respect and consideration.
They meet travelers like you every day, and if you happen to be the exception that makes their day, they just might take the time to make yours.
